Earlier this year, Evernoon co-founders David M Clarke and Jurga Zilinskiene MBE were guests of the China-Britian Business Council (CBBC) and Invest Hong Kong at the Chinese Burns Supper and business awards in Edinburgh. The event supported The Eric Liddell Community charity and Mr Clarke successfully bid for a framed print of Eric Liddell that was later signed by supporters of the charity.
Remembering Eric Liddell’s Legacy
The event served as a timely reminder of the remarkable life and legacy of Eric Liddell, a man whose story transcends the boundaries of sports and embodies the spirit of a cultural connection that Evernoon strives to foster.
Eric Liddell: A Life of Service and Cultural Bridging
Born in Tianjin, China during the late Qing Dynasty, Eric Liddell’s life was intrinsically linked to the Far East. Educated in England and Scotland, he returned to China as a missionary and teacher, dedicating himself to serving the local community.
His deep and personal connection to China symbolises a parallel to Evernoon’s work in fostering cultural collaboration between different languages and cultures. Just as Liddell bridged cultures through his dedication and experiences, we are on the bridges between Hong Kong, China and the UK, where we forge strong bonds of collaboration and mutual understanding through our commitment to serve for the greater global community.
Athletic Prowess and Principles
Liddell, however, wasn’t just a man of service. He was a phenomenal athlete, excelling in both rugby and sprinting. The 1924 Paris Olympics stand as a testament to his prowess, where he famously refused to compete on Sundays due to his religious beliefs yet still won 400-metre race of his own choice.
This unwavering commitment to his principles, alongside his athletic triumphs, were immortalised in the 1981 award-wining movie Chariots of Fire with its epic soundtrack by Vangelis and the 2016 movie Wings of Eagles by Hong Kong filmmaker Stephen Shin. The remarkable values and achievements of Liddell are an enduring inspiration to generations long after his passing.
A Timeless Inspiration
Mr Clarke said: “As we look towards the upcoming Paris Olympic Games, Eric Liddell’s story serves as a powerful reminder that true strength lies not just in physical prowess, but also in integrity and the courage to stand by one’s convictions.
We at Evernoon wish all the participating athletes the very best in their endeavours and may the spirit of sportsmanship and respect for culture continue to shine brightly on the world stage.”
Good luck to all the Olympic players in the coming weeks!
