Romanian Language Facts
The name of Romanian comes from the Latin romanus (‘roman citizen’), indicating Romania’s fascinating heritage at the Eastern extremity of the Roman Empire, during which time it was known as Dacia. Today, the country has the curious distinction of being the only Romance language spoken in Eastern Europe. That means it is very closely related to familiar languages such as French, Spanish, Italian and Portuguese. That said, its geographical position at the confluence of many historical migration patterns means that Romanian’s lexicon is highly diverse, incorporating influences from Turkish, Greek, Hungarian, and a range of Slavic languages.
It is spoken by 24 million people as a native language, with over 4 million who speak it as a second. It is primarily spoken in Romania and Moldova, as well as a sizeable diaspora spread over other continents.
